Riot wanted to redefine the live in-stadium experience and elevate the streaming presentation of the 2016 League of Legends World Championship to match the level of the global spectacle it has become.
We developed a broadcast package and live projection-mapped graphic enhancement, both built and designed together to tell a cohesive story for the 2016 League of Legends World Championship.
For the graphics package, Troika developed a presentation that mirrored the look of the gameplay experience and was true to the League of Legends community. The game presentation was designed to increase the visibility of individual players and teams throughout gameplay so fans could follow their favorite players and keep up with the playmakers.
We used projection-mapping and game technology to not only enhance and amplify the live in-stadium experience but to create a unique game-driven visualization that made it easier for fans to track the game’s progress. Like a "living chess board,” this innovative implementation showed which teams had the advantage, built anticipation for crucial moments, and celebrated spectacular achievements by bringing to life a virtual sporting event on a massive scale.
More than 18,000 fans packed the sold-out event at Staples Center while millions live-streamed the final on YouTube and Twitch. Troika helped Riot redefine what a live eSports experience can be by delivering a more immersive and meaningful presentation that resonates with fans.
