Music High Definition Building Our Characters To occupy our mythological world, we created a vast diversity of creatures that reflect the channel’s wide range of musical styles  We focused on three genres of musical characters: Rock, Hip Hop and Country, (which roughly represent the three channels MTV, Vh1 and CMT). For the character development, we studied a number of iconic music albums and researched the myths and legends of different periods and cultures.  Many spoofs had already been done with musical icons and we didn’t want to go there.  We wanted to make sure our characters were both original and sophisticated enough for an adult audience. At the same time, the client wanted to keep the feel raw and primordial.  The characters needed to have strong roots in music to best define the channel, so we also added references to the ancient origins of today’s musical styles. We also drew from biblical references, especially The Book of Genesis and The Tower of Babel. The style of character design was inspired by Indonesian shadow puppets. We were liked how they are both crude and eloquent at the same time. Our characters not puppets, but they do have a coarse puppet-like movement that is primitive and raw.
